Two new sweeteners are on the shelves this month. Organic Zero ($13 for a 12-ounce pouch) is made from evaporated sugar cane juice, which is fermented and crystallized into a sugar alcohol (erythritol). It's about 70 percent as sweet as sugar, and its mild aftertaste is less noticeable when mixed into drinks or baked into muffins. Another new sweetener, Zsweet (starting at $8 for 50 packets), uses fruit extracts to change the aftertaste of erythritol so it's more like sugar. (Find both at Wild Oats and Whole Foods.) The scoop on erythritol: A teaspoon has less than one calorie. It wont' raise your blood sugar because your body can't digest it. And it doesn't have the same laxative effect as other sugar alcohols, but large amounts can cause diarrhea.
